Our Mission
Our mission is to build social and economic resilience for the trans* community, and to provide refuge from the unique intersectional challenges faced by trans* people, by providing transitional housing, hosting community events, and building a mutual support network.
Some FAQs
What do we do, and what do we do differently?
NETS is committed to providing for our residents as whole individuals by providing more than just a roof over their heads. We strive to provide people with critical resources such as financial literacy classes, professional development, assistance applying to jobs, school, or government benefits, or access to medical care, for their transition or otherwise. We accomplish this via our direct relationships with other organizations citywide, especially queer and housing focused organizations. We also host events where trans* people can pick up life skills, transition supplies and clothing, or just feel connected to their community. NETS seeks to empower the trans community directly by putting the tools to take control of their lives directly into their hands.
Who is NETS for?
Everyone! NETS is open to any trans* person who needs help, regardless of race, religion, nationality, disability, or any other minority status. Even if you aren't a resident of the NETS house, you're still welcome at any of our public events to participate in clothing swaps, learn from our skills workshops, or make friends at game nights. Non-trans friends or partners are also welcome (unless stated otherwise), as long as they are respectful allies. The only thing we don't tolerate is intolerance.
Why the *?
We use trans with an asterisk to be as inclusive as possible to people of any gender identity that does not match what they were assigned at birth, be they intersex, genderfluid, agender, a non-Western gender such as Two-Spirit, or anything else. We are also inclusive to people whether they transition medically or decide not to because of medical restrictions or simple preference. NETS believes that only an individual can decide their gender, presentation, and pronouns, and it is up to us to accept and respect that.
As an organization founded by two trans people of color, we are intimately familiar with all the myriad ways that gender identity overlaps and intersects with other aspects of identity such as race, nationality, and even languages spoken, especially in queer spaces. We aim to be as intersectional as possible for all of our residents and community members. NETS is committed to always being not just not racist, but actively anti-racist in our policies and actions. In fact, NETS is dedicated to combating oppression on every axis.
